Recommendations for first car?

I need a car to go to school and help my family out with errands but I know nothing about cars. I have a budget of 35- 40k and I hope to get a reliable, safe car that’s not completely ugly if possible. I’d like to have a new car as well. Any recommendations? Thank you!!!
