Got a noise complaint and need some advice

Me (26 F) and my fiance (28 M) moved into our apartment a little over a month ago, we are on the top floor. Tonight, for the very first time ever, we had guest over. It was my mom, 2 sisters, brother in law and 2 nieces (ages 3 and 1). We were just hanging out in my apartment sitting around and talking while my nieces played. It was a Friday night and at 10:30pm my downstairs neighbor (who we have never met) came pounding on our door saying he has been patient for the past 2 weeks, but he has had enough with us being loud and with our kids running around. He complained that it was 10:30 and he was trying to sleep and then stomped off before my fiance could even get a word in. We were just genuinely confused because.. we don’t have kids… my nieces have been over to our apartment 1 other time but it was in the morning/afternoon and we babysat them for maybe a few hours. Otherwise, before tonight with my nieces over, me and my fiance don’t do anything crazy causing noise that we’re aware of.

Can I be upset that my neighbor is having these complaints at 10:30 on a Friday Night?? I write this as a fellow very light sleeper who’s nonnegotiable was to be on a top unit because I know that I am a light sleeper. I also work nightshift and never expect the world to be quiet for me, so I sleep with sound machines and a box fan. I can appreciate getting the complaint, because now we know to be more mindful of the noise we are making, but he was so rude to my fiance in this encounter. I also feel a little sad for myself and fearful that I wont be able to have people over on the weekends. I can completely understand if it was like 2am and we were awake and being loud, but idk 10:30 feels so early 😭

also to note, we were Playing music but at a super low level. I feel like after reading a few posts in this sub from downstairs neighbors l’m gonna be ripped to shreds by them, but I guess I just needed to vent.

I feel that I am an understanding person and can feel the pain and frustrations of someone who is trying to sleep, but is unable to due to noises. I have been there many times in my life. I guess I am upset that the neighbor was so rude about it and especially when it felt dishonest like claiming that our “kids” run around all the time when we don’t have kids!! Me and my fiance don’t work from home so we are out of the apartment a lot of the time and when we are home we are just doing normal daily chores or sitting on the couch watching tv.

Anyway I think I just needed to vent. Also please be kind downstairs neighbor friends 🙃 hoping there’s someone who can relate to what we just encountered!
