how i left
i left,
i’d avoid mirrors,
shower in the dark.
buy clothes in sizes
that were way too big.
skip breakfast tomorrow,
the next day too.
i’d cry against the cool tile,
elbows resting against the toilet.
asking, why me?
an answer — i never got.
the dark circles grew
beneath my once lively eyes,
my unbreakable smile faltered.
a little longer, i said.
it’ll all be worth it.
it was always a little longer,
until it was too late.
and now i’m gone.
