English adaptation of a Persian protest poem by Shervin Hajipour
This poem is inspired by the recent uprising of Iranian protesters, during which thousands were reportedly killed over two days opposing the government. I’ve tried to preserve the imagery of the original poem in English. You can find the original Persian song on YouTube by searching for “Shervin - Iranam.” The images shown at the end of the video depict some of the protesters who died.
Boot on my throat,
Noose around my neck,
Baton welts wrote,
I speak unchecked.
Hold my open wound,
Press it cold,
You'll tire soon,
But I won't fold.
Kneeling on stone,
Death draws near,
This poem alone, my last spear.
Take away again,
My soil, my home,
My fallen frame
Speaks for its own.
Because I am Iran.
