Tabloid magazine (Globe) from January 11, 2000 (just FYI, the photos of John and Julie in the spread were taken in September 1994). After reading the spread and I can’t help but wonder if Julie was the “unnamed close source” behind it. The details mentioned closely mirror what she later shared with Steven M. Gillon in 2019 and with RoseMarie Terenzio in 2024.

For example, in 2019, Gillon discreetly frames Julie’s claims about Carolyn’s alleged drug use. He writes that Julie told him that John had “heard from many of his friends that Carolyn was abusing cocaine but she denied it. The biggest issue was whether he should stay with her or leave. John felt that Carolyn had stopped working on the marriage a long time ago. Why, then, should he work so hard to keep the marriage going?”… this is basically Julie indirectly saying Carolyn was abusing drugs. I think Julie avoided saying “John told me that Carolyn was abusing cocaine”…

It’s similar to what’s mentioned in the magazine above which mentioned: “John said he had tried to convince Carolyn to seek help for her cocaine habit, but she refused,” confides the “friend”. And, “John said: ‘Julie freed me. She made me see that admitting my marriage to Carolyn is over and going our separate ways is a positive thing to do. The negative thing would be to keep torturing each other by hanging tough in a relationship that we both know isn’t working.’” … sounds like something Julie would say. It also mentions John calling Julie his “soulmate,” which also sounds like something Julie would say, since she has said herself that she believed he was her soulmate in the 2024 biography for which she was interviewed.

What the magazine mentions is similar to what Julie said in 2019—the idea that John was thinking of divorcing his wife over her drug use, and that he didn’t want to stay married to Carolyn because he felt she wasn’t putting in any effort and had given up. This article is also obviously very self-serving and makes Julie out to be some kind of savior. Of course, Julie was going to say that it was better for him to split from Carolyn, because it would have benefited her to have Carolyn gone.

The “Manhattan antique dealer affair” was debunked by Guy Clark, Carolyn’s gay friend, whose letters to her were stolen from the apartment after the crash. In those letters, Guy mentioned wanting to be an antique dealer and the tabloid that got ahold of his letters printed those false rumors.

Do you think Julie was the “anonymous close source” for this tabloid spread? I believe it was Julie because of how detailed the account is. We know John didn’t tell anyone about seeing Julie Baker at the hotel—Gary Ginsberg only saw her waiting for him in the lobby late at night, and even then, John didn’t share any details. Rosemarie didn’t even know he was staying at the hotel to begin with so it wasn’t her. That makes it unlikely that the “close friend” narrating the spread got this information from John himself, since he wasn’t telling people about it.

That really only leaves Julie Baker as the source.

Do you think this is just a case of “mistress mentality” influencing the narrative, or do you think there’s some validity to the claims about Carolyn’s alleged drug use? Beyond sex, it’s likely John confided in her—as many men do with their mistresses—about Carolyn, and she may have absorbed and amplified everything he shared.
