I quit my 9-5 job last year with only $8k saved — here's what actually happened (and what I wish I knew)
A year ago I was burned out, underpaid, and staring at the same cubicle walls every day. I had just $8,000 in savings, no rich parents, and a ton of doubt from everyone around me.
I quit anyway.
Fast forward 12 months:
I now make 2.5x what I did before (mostly through freelance + a small side business)
But I also had 3 months where I ate instant noodles and questioned every decision
Learned that "passive income" isn't passive at all in the beginning
The mental freedom is worth more than the money (most days)
The biggest surprises:
• People who said "you'll regret it" were the first to ask for advice
• Your network matters way more than skills sometimes
• Health insurance? Yeah, figure that out BEFORE you jump
If you're thinking about making the leap (or already did and are struggling), what's one thing that surprised you the most? Or what's holding you back right now?
Would love to hear your stories — the good, the bad, and the "I almost went broke" ones. No judgment here.
TL;DR: Quit my job with almost nothing saved → survived (barely) → actually happier now. Worth it?
