Julie Baker, who was interviewed for the 2019 book America’s Reluctant Prince, shared that John “hung out” at her place before the crash, and that when he moved to the Stanhope Hotel, he called her over. Now why would John have been hanging out at his ex-girlfriend Julie Baker’s apartment alone? An ex-girlfriend who didn’t like his wife, and whom his wife didn’t like. Let’s be real—if Julie was bold enough to sit in John’s lap in front of Carolyn at his birthday party (which Carolyn invited her to, not John), she was probably very comfortable doing more when Carolyn wasn’t around, and John did what he did best: cheat and gaslight. 

From Gillon’s book: “During these difficult final months of his life, John reached out to Baker for comfort and conversation. They talked about many of the topics that close friends discuss. John would mention a book that he was reading or say something about the George issue they were working on at the time. They were close enough that they could also sit in silence for long periods of time. But Julie was one of the few people whom John would open up to and discuss his personal issues with. A few weeks earlier, John had come over to her apartment, where the two "hung out." Now, on his first night alone at the hotel, he asked her to join him.” Julie also told author Christopher Andersen in 2000, during an interview for his book The Day John Died, that John “called her to his hotel room to watch a video.” But over the course of his marriage to Carolyn, she “knew what that really meant”.

“Sit in silence for long periods of time”… “discussed many of the topics close friends discuss”… “hung out at her apartment”… “watched a video” what? Who actually believes this? Are we supposed to think John went over to her place just to sit in silence, watch TV or talk about George magazine? Please.

We already know she had John’s private cellphone number—he called her from a Yankees game the night before he died, according to his friend Gary Ginsberg. And this was a phone he had only recently gotten, per Rosemarie Terenzio, which suggests he gave Julie his number right away. If they just wanted to talk about the magazine or a book he was reading, he could have simply called her. Why would those conversations need to happen alone, in the privacy of his hotel room late at night or at her apartment? Who is Julie kidding? They were doing one thing only, and it definitely didn’t include talking.

Did Carolyn know about these hangouts? Probably not. And before bringing up Michael Bergin—even if you believe his claims about an affair, the you have to accept his account that includes Carolyn saying she turned to him because she believed John was having an affair.

Then Julie just retracts all of this narrative she spent years curating and gives readers a BS lie that she never saw him in his hotel room at night and that they only had lunch at the hotel a few days before he died. “I did however grab a quick lunch with him (which we often did) at the Stanhope a few days before the accident.”. Well, too bad for Julie—John’s friends and staff have written extensively about where he had lunch that last week, and none of them mention her. So how many lunches was he having in a day? She couldn’t even come up with a believable coverup. On the Wednesday before he died, John had lunch with his wife and her sister at the Stanhope’s Café M. On Thursday, he had lunch with Steve Florio at San Domenico and dinner alone at Zutto. On Friday, he had lunch with a George editor at Trionfo.

Carolyn was literally crying hysterically on the phone with Rosemarie the day she died, saying all she wanted from her husband was some “normal married time” and to feel like a priority. Yet somehow John was finding time to “hang out” at his ex-girlfriend–turned–mistress’s apartment. Are you kidding me?
