Should I get my money back after being scammed?

I (21 F) recently tried to buy a camera off a buy & trade facebook group. Long story short, it was a scam, and I’m out $1,600.

The problem is, the scammer didn’t have me send the money to his account, he had me send it to his “wife” (who reached out to me after I sent the money and told me I got scammed)so that way there was no ties to his finances. She (the middleman) sent him the money, and then he (the scammer) blocked us both.

This is where I get stuck. I can file a claim with PayPal and get my money back, but it would put this other woman in debt to PayPal. She has been very pleasant and helpful to interact with through this whole fiasco, said she has told me she is a new mother and isn’t working right now, so she isn’t able to pay me back the money I sent her. We do not live in the same country, and I am admittedly a little gun-shy that her bringing in a baby into this could be another scam.

Should I cancel the claim I filed with PayPal, putting me out of $1,600 I budgeted for, or should I keep the claim standing, get my money back, but potentially create a situation for this woman?
