Midlife Metal Crisis
Looking for some community help here. I'm turning 48 in a couple months, and my listening interests have really stagnated over the years. Not sure if this happens to other people, but I find myself not taking the time to sit down and REALLY listen to music to get into new stuff. I still follow metal blogs and hear a song I like here and there, but for the most part I just end up listening to the same albums I've been listening to since the mid-2000s, or a playlist of one off songs that have caught my ear for a minute.
What I don't do is find whole albums or individual artists that I REALLY get into. I get it, music is distributed differently and with everything available via streaming it's hard to give music the time and attention it needs to really sink in, but dammit - I want to try. I miss the magic of "getting" a band and having it really click.
I'm going to see Emperor for the first time next week, and I remember how my mind melted when Anthems really clicked for me on about the fourth or fifth listen. Ahhhh, the days of buying a CD and sitting down with the lyrics in the booklet because dammit, I paid good money for this and I was gonna give the album a fair shake even if I didn't love that first spin.
Anyhow, this got way too long - I would love some recommendations for newer bands that are going to be worth the journey to deep dive into - music, lyrics, the whole nine yards. For reference, here's probably the shit I listen to the most:
- Nevermore
- Katatonia's early and mid-years
- Emperor
- At The Gates early stuff
- Early Slayer
- Dissection
- Arcturus
- Megadeth
- Amorphis early stuff
- Death
- Old Hypocrisy
- Primordial
- Old Samael
- Old Moonspell
- Early In Flames & Dissection
- Carcass
- Paradise Lost
- My Dying Bride
- Anathema
- Early Entombed
- Type O
Yeah, that's the most 90s metal kid list ever, probably. "Hey look, I like Earache Records and Century Media!"
Anyhow, thanks in advance, looking forward to some new metal that I'll enjoy!
