Is this behavioral?
I have a 9yo ottb mare I got in sept 2025 that came very malnourished. She’s much healthier now, and in the process of treating ulcers. She came off the track in 2022 with 7-8 homes in between.
I don’t know if it’s behavioral like disrespect, or if she’s uncomfortable, or if she just is impatient and wants to work type of thing. Once I get on, she’s completely fine and doesn’t exhibit any signs of ulcers or pain. At the hook she paws, paces, stamps her foot down if I hold it up too long. I move her feet to do something with her energy, but I tie her back up and she starts all over. I try not to really reprimand her because I don’t know if it’s tied to her ulcers.
I have had my vet out and he said the only thing that’s really medically wrong with her is her stomach is bothering her and she’s sound otherwise. She was scoped a few days ago and she does have squamous ulcers, not many, but they’re on the deeper side. We’re in the process of treatment.
When we’re hand walking on the ground, or lunging I feel like she doesn’t pay attention to me, and is always looking for her friends, or her mind is elsewhere. I change directions, have her back up, etc. anything I can think of to keep it interesting and keep her engaged, but she doesn’t really care. Is it a connection thing?
There is a wash rack outside near her pasture with a hook. Would it be beneficial to brush her out there so she can see her friends when the weather is nice? Or is that enabling it more?
I’m just not sure what to do. This is my first horse I’ve owned rather than leasing and I just want to do right by her. Thanks so much for any advice:)
