Landlord doesn’t want to renew lease to move in relatives
Hello!
I’ve come here because I’m confused about my tenant rights as a renter. For context I’ve been living in my current apartment in Brooklyn for the last 5 coming up on 6 years. I have a lease that expires on July 1st and my roommate is moving out. She gave my landlord a heads up stupidly and he called me to talk about it. He mentioned he wanted to move in 3 of his relatives into the unit without a lot of context and mentioned that I could move downstairs with the other tenant, but for obvious reasons he declined.
I’m pretty positive the building is rent stabilized seeing as my increase is always only about 4% each year. He hasn’t provided me with a lease notice or asking written statement about renewing/not renewing my lease. April 1st would mark the 90 day notice period and I don’t think anything is coming in as an offer. I mentioned that I would move out because I was unsure of my rights over the phone and not written. I would rather stay because I can’t afford to move at the moment. What should I do?
