The NBA season should start in September
The biggest complaint, aside from tanking, that most fans have with the modern NBA is how much time players—particularly the stars that casual fans pay to see—are missing. The 65 game rule was created to address it, but has arguably done the opposite because while stars are incentivized to try to play 65 games, they're pushing themselves to the point that they're just missing time to injury instead.
In the current era, offensive schemes (and by extension, defensive ones) require far more movement out of players than ever before. Many of these dudes are sprinting nonstop for the majority of the time they're on the court, and its clearly wearing their bodies down. Last year injuries to Tatum and Hailburton totally changed the direction of the playoffs, which is something nobody wants to see.
Many have remarked that the players play too many games, which is true...but nobody is going to sign up to play less games because they'll all make less money. Players don't want it and neither do owners, so its never gonna happen.
The solution is I think weirdly obvious, and I'm not sure why the NBA isn't pushing for it: just start the season a few weeks earlier. Play the same number of games, but now you've got 20-30 days or so of extra breathing room in the schedule. No more back to backs. More rest days for everyone. Players get hurt less and miss fewer games. Nobody loses money, fans get a better experience, everyone wins. The offseason is slightly shorter, but there's also more downtime during the season where players can actually see their families.
