How to find a supervisor: process
“How do I even find a supervisor?"
Students looking to start their private practice ask the same question. ALL the time. And, rightly so!
So here's a step-by-step guide:
1 - Identify what you want to work with
Are you leaning toward CBT? Emotional processing? Relationship work? Your supervision should align with the kind of therapy you want to practice.
2 - Reach out to senior psychologists directly
Send a simple message introducing your educational background, the kind of clients you want to work with, and ask if they offer supervision.
3 - Ask specific questions
How do you structure supervision? How do you charge? What kind of cases do you usually guide supervisees on?
4 - Assess alignment
Does their way of thinking match how you want to practice? If you want structured cognitive work, a highly emotion-focused supervisor may not be your first choice and vice versa.
5 - Be open to change
If you realize a particular approach isn't enough for your client, it's okay to seek additional supervision from someone with a different modality.
