Summary: In the realm of the Entity, Dwight constantly meets new people. Strangers that come and go in the blink of an eye, never to be seen again. This is the fleeting companionship he’s been used to all his life. But there’s one person who keeps showing up over and over again: David. And as they interact, they start to gain something they never thought possible in this living nightmare. Will their newfound bond be enough to transcend death itself? Or will they become just like the others and succumb to the despair of their grim new reality? Dwight doesn’t know. The only thing he knows is that if he doesn’t survive long enough to make it to the next trial, he won’t even have the chance.

Author’s Note: Just like the last chapter, this one was supposed to have another segment in the trials itself after the campfire scene. But as I was writing, I came to the conclusion that A: These characters need to have a long moment to talk and connect on a more personal level, which they can't really do when The Horrors (tm) are after them. And B: The trial scene I had in mind wouldn't have done anything for the overall story that the last and following trials weren't already doing. So, I scrapped it altogether. Instead I combined this campfire conversation with the convo that was initially planned to take place in chapter 4. Not only do things flow so much better this way, but I think this is actually my favorite chapter so far. We finally get to see Dwight and David share some chemistry in a lower-stakes environment, and doing it all at once instead of split across 2 chapters does wonders for both the pacing and the believability of their bond. But what do you think? Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy!
