Ideas for a career for me?
40 year old with a degree in Finance.
Actually working as a software dev because I graduated during the financial crisis of 2008 and those were the only jobs in my area (south UK)
Very technical but actually hate tech work for a living! I currently program routers and it's SO BORING.
That being said, while I am not making huge money, I do alright and pay for bills and add to my savings. So, I count my blessings!
So, with software business winding down and me developing actual depression sitting all day chasing packets on the internet, I am reconsidering my life choices.
At the time when I started, I had no choice really. My family is poor and broken, I took whatever I could get into that promised to get me out of there...
All my life I've been hearing - and I've witnessed on my own - that the best careers are those that one is intrinsically motivated to pursue.
One criteria I've recently heard is "would you spend this evening studying that stuff instead of playing computer games?"
Well - I have an answer for that!
I like to study people, especially their motivations.
As individuals and as groups.
I genuinely read research papers about behavioral economics for fun.
It gives me a lot of clarity on what's going on in the world.
It's actually useful in my current day job. For example: I am not worried about "getting this function to conform to the spec". I am asking "why would an application developer using my network want to go through UDP relay and not some other technique of connection resilience?" Once I answer that, I write the best UDP relay server and clients are thrilled :)
Made a couple of good moves on oil futures, having apparently more clarity about certain ongoing situations than our own leadership ;)
- But trading is not for me; I don't have the nerves to risk huge amounts of money, many times per month. This will give me a heart attack.
Also, helped un-mess my family now that I am older - because I thought about the individuals, their lived experience, their personalities and therefore their position and motivations.
Then, I was able to find a common ground and reconcile some epic disputes.
...
If any of the above blabbing sounds like a job description, please do share your thoughts :)
