Worried about using backpack as carry on due to thickness

Hello all, what hs been your experience carrying a backpack as carry on? I upgraded to cabin + personal item because the backpack is 50cm tall, 35 cm high, but it's just about 20 cm wide, maybe a couple of cms more, is that going to be an issue? Thanks I'm traveling from Berlin
