The Tabai Army rides in, led by a ridiculously handsome general with a sword that hums with power. I touch his hand (for research), and the sword recognizes me? Suspicious. He hands me a handkerchief. Classic.
How to check for spiritual power 101
I play damsel in distress, then ditch the mortal body to spy on him in ghost form. Call my descendant Feng Yi (who looks like he’s one sneeze away from the grave) for intel. Turns out this general is a scholar-turned-warrior with a mysterious past. Also, he smells like trouble.
Chen Ying finally tells me his name. I still don’t know the general’s name. Embarrassing. We get kicked out of the General's residence. Fine. Help the kid bury his dad.

Turn paper money into butterflies because I’m generous like that. The general shows up!! Time to test his sword. Redirect an assassin’s arrow at him. He deflects it. Cool. He gives me his veiled hat. Adorable.
An ancient prophecy says (powangjian) sword’s master will give me the five senses. Three hundred years of waiting. Maybe this pretty general is the one. Off I go to rescue my 'brother' from an evil spirit while giving Commander Meng credit for it!
I Accidentally Confessed to a Mortal
The kid is too attached. I tell him Duan Xu (finally got his name) might die, but he can follow him. He chooses me instead. Sigh. I have seen Duan Xu fight. He’s too skilled. His skull is perfect. His reflexes are supernatural. His intutition is perfect too. I’m intrigued.
one frozen General thawed by Her Majesty
Feng Yi’s intel: Duan Xu’s servants all died in a bandit attack. Everyone who knew him as a child is dead. Suspicious. I’m now 90% sure he’s not the real Duan Xu. But who is he? He asks me to be his wind diviner. I agree. He tests me by asking about the color of his sleeve. I fail. He knows I can’t see colors.
Back at General's residence (after emotionally blackmailing my way in), I tell ghost stories to kids. Warn them about spirits with black eyes (like me). They’re thrilled. He overhears and walks up to me. Some kids thinks Duan Xu and I engaged. Mortals are weird.
Captain Meng is suspicious of me. To throw her off, I “confess” I’m in love with Duan Xu. Then I tell her we’re both in love with him. Her face is priceless.
Later, Duan Xu duels Commander Wu. I watch from a roof, eating melon seeds. I predict Duan Xu will win because Wu’s skull is inferior. I’m right.

His fighting style is too refined. This man has killed many people. My impostor theory is gaining evidence.
Duan Xu plans a suicide crossing of the frozen Guan River.

I borrow a ruan (string instrument) to practice a funeral dirge for him. Not because I care. Just want his sword. Visit the battlefield in spirit form, I play as he fights. He’s surrounded. I play faster.
Then suddenly, red birds fill the sky. He shouts in perfect North Chong language: “Red birds will burn all living beings.” I’m now 100% sure he’s not Duan Xu. Feng Yi’s intel about the bandit attack was the final clue. The real Duan Xu is dead. Who is this man?
Han Lingqiu collapses hearing the Chong language. Interesting.
Back in the city, news of victory spreads. Duan Xu sends a carriage for me. On the road, we’re ambushed. Chen Ying refuses to let me surrender to the enemy (adorable). So I step out of the carriage and snap my fingers.

I arrive in one piece. Duan Xu had sent reinforcements, but I handled it myself. He’s even more suspicious of me now. Good. I faint in his arms (mortal body caught a fever). He catches me and my slip-up. He now knows I can’t feel hot or cold.
He brings me medicine, insists on feeding it to me. I spill it on his face when he mentions he knows I have a crush on him (thanks, Captain Meng). Embarrassing.
Yan Ke appears. He’s my right-hand ghost, clearly in love with me, and trying to win me over with tea. I’m not interested. He takes over ghost realm duties so I can “rest.”

Meanwhile, Duan Xu convinces the army to blow up the Guan River using my weather prediction. Commander Wu is furious. Duan Xu calmly explains that this is war, and victory requires sacrifice. He’s a mad gambler. I like it. Later, Han Lingqiu confronts Duan Xu, saying they’ve met before. He has no memory (lost it in a past injury). Duan Xu >!lies and !<says they haven’t.
That night, I sense death. Duan Xu blew up the river early. I rush to the battlefield in ghost form.
He’s standing there, surrounded by chaos and ME!
When he passes through my ethereal form, the pearl my aunt left me vibrates violently. The spell bearer. The one who can lend me his senses. Three hundred years of waiting, and it’s him.
I walk through gray clouds, thinking: I was born dead, never knowing color, taste, warmth. But this man ... this mad, brilliant, impostor general ... he might be the one who finally makes me feel alive.
