You can be arrested without a warrant in India -and most people don’t know when
A lot of people think police always need a warrant to arrest you.
Not true.
Under the Code of Criminal Procedure 1973, police can arrest you without a warrant in several situations, like:
•If you’re caught in a cognizable offence (serious crimes like theft, assault, etc.)
•If they believe you might destroy evidence
•If you’re likely to flee
But here’s the part most people miss:
Even in these cases, police must follow procedure — like informing you of the grounds of arrest and your right to bail (in bailable offences).
Also, you have the right to inform someone and the right to a lawyer.
So yeah—police can arrest without a warrant…
But they can’t do it however they want.
Knowing this difference can literally save you from being misused.
