Am I wrong for wanting to walk my niece down the aisle even though my daughter isn’t invited to the wedding?
So my niece (26F) lost her father when she was 4, and ever since, I’ve sort of been a father like figure for her because it’s the least I could do for my sister. My niece and I have a pretty close bond.
I also have a daughter (25F) I’m close with. Her mom and I divorced more than a decade ago after her mom’s affair, however we’ve still maintained a pretty close bond.
My niece and my daughter had a big falling out in high school when my daughter dated my niece’s ex for a couple months. My daughter has since tried to apologize for it multiple times but my niece wants nothing to do with her.
So my niece is getting married in a few months and she’s asked me walk her down the aisle, and to also do the father daughter dance with her. She also hasn’t invited my daughter to the wedding. My daughter has been feeling really sad about it, and I FaceTimed her last night and asked her to be honest with her feelings and she cried pretty badly and said she just feels horrible that I’m walking my niece down while she isn’t even invited to the wedding. She says it feels symbolic like I view my niece as a daughter more than her.
I told my daughter it’s nothing like that, we’re all grown adults, and if my niece doesn’t want her at the wedding, that’s her choice. I also told her if my niece really wants me to walk her down the aisle, I can’t just outright reject it. My niece literally wrote a five page handwritten letter on how much I mean to her when she invited me to walk her down the aisle.
Am I wrong for wanting to walk my niece down the aisle even though my daughter is pretty hurt by it?
