3–4 years as a district manager (~89k) and feeling stuck — what are my actual options?
I’m 34, currently a district manager for a food/hospitality company (think something similar to Tropical Smoothie Cafe, but not that brand).
This is my 3rd year going into my 4th. I make about ~$89k.
When I first started, the pay felt solid and the job felt like a big step up from store-level roles. But now I’m starting to feel stuck.
Even after strong performance in years 1–3, my raises have only been ~1.5% each year. The job itself is stable and honestly not that hard anymore, but I don’t feel like I’m growing — and living in NYC makes the salary feel tighter every year.
My responsibilities are typical multi-unit stuff:
- overseeing multiple locations
- hiring/firing
- cost control
- compliance
- working with franchise partners / ownership
A few things I’m struggling with:
- I don’t see a clear path to significantly higher pay unless I wait years for a higher corporate role
- I’m worried my skillset is too “restaurant-specific”
- I don’t really know what comparable roles outside hospitality even look like
- I’m honestly a bit afraid to job search — people at my company have been let go after leadership found out
I feel like I’ve hit a plateau, but I don’t know what the next move actually is.
For anyone who’s been in a similar role:
- What did you transition into (if you left hospitality)?
- What jobs actually value district/multi-unit management experience?
- Is staying and climbing the only realistic path, or are there better pivots?
Would really appreciate any advice or perspective. I feel like I might be limiting myself just because I don’t know what’s out there.
