Retro Game Sunday: Luigi’s Mansion (GCN) Review
I never thought much of the Luigi’s mansion games when I was younger. Not because I thought they were bad or stupid, but it just didn’t appeal to me as a concept and my only exposure to it was the Nintendo Land attraction version (fire game mode though)
Now when Nintendo releases the GameCube classics collection for NSO subs who owned a Switch 2) I was ecstatic, GameCube held some of my personal favorite retro titles and it provided a way to play them without having to deal with plugging in the old GameCube and dealing with graphics that just don’t display well on modern TVs. I was pretty disappointed with the launch selection though, sure Windwaker was cool but by the time the GCN NSO collection came into switch 2 I felt a sort of Zelda burnout so I just hadn’t had an interest in playing it. Of course, one of the games that came out with it first was Luigi’s mansion. I was like “oh cool” and moved on.
Fast forward to now, Metroid Prime 2 STILL isn’t on NSO, but I digress, I ended up playing Luigi’s mansion because my dad booted it up and I was like “oh sure I’ll play too with you” and guys… I was missing out on a LOT. On with the Review!
So, an overview: Luigi’s mansion is what I would consider a slower Action-adventure game with light puzzle elements. It’s relatively short, and clocked in about 5-6 hours of my time during my first playthrough. And in my second I’d say I’ll finish around the 4 hour mark, an easy game to knock out in an afternoon, nice!
Luigi’s mansion is a pretty easy game all things considered, sometimes a ghost may give you trouble with its capture requirements or a boo will give you a lot of trouble, but otherwise the game itself is relatively breezy to anyone familiar with video games. The gameplay is like tug-of-war the video game, while also functioning as a money collectathon.
The premise is also simple: Mario has gone missing in a mysterious mansion that Luigi had won in a competition he didn’t even enter. It’s up to you and the strange scientist E. Gadd to clear out the mansion and save Mario from the evil King Boo.
And.. that’s it! Without spoilers, anyway. I give Luigi’s Mansion for the Nintendo GameCube an…
8/10! I recommend anyone looking into a weirder and more experimental Nintendo game to play this one!
That’s all, thanks for reading :3
I’m off to my den to game more… bye bye :3
