Worried about my financial future because of my parents
I'm 25 years old and live at home with my parents. I am mostly finished my undergraduate degree. I just have one course left that I plan to complete in summer or fall. I currently work a full time minimum wage plus sales commission job that's fully remote. I was unemployed for a year prior to this because I wanted to spend a year trying to finish up my degree. Before that, I was working part time. I just have two older sisters (i'm the only son), one is going to get married this summer and will move in with her fiancé because he owns his own house, and my other sister lives on her own and makes good money and the guy she's with is financially well off.
Both of my parent's don't work and it means that i'm often the one having to spend money on groceries, bills, and even something like my mom's medicine that I paid for this weekend. Both of my parent's use to run a family business for about 15 years but sold it during the pandemic because it wasn't running as well as before. My parent's relationship is like your typical toxic desi marriage.
My mom suffered a bad leg fracture in late 2024 and has recovered well since then. However, she sometimes does have issues with standing for long periods of time, which can make it difficult for her to stand for long periods of time. She said she plans to start working for this place that she worked for about two years ago because she knows the owner well and he informed her how he needs to hire someone. My mom hides her savings in my savings account, which is about 120k. The reason why she does this is because she wants to hide it from my dad. However, she told me that money is technically ours and it's all going to go to you.
My dad currently sit's at home all day. He just sits in our office all day, watching news from India and doing TikTok live because he say's you can make money from it. He apparently also tries doing crypto and trading but he think's he's going to easily become a millionaire from it. My mom once asked him to check a leaking faucet and he responded back in Punjabi saying "oh leave it! Who cares! I'm 60 years old now, you think im going to keep working forever." He purchased a bunch of properties to try and flip or rent out here in Southern Ontario. I believe that plan didn't work out well because property values are dropping and finding tenants is harder. Now he's sold some of them and trying to sell whatever he can. One property is delayed for several years and he's involved a lawyer to try and get a refund. According to my mom, he's given 50k to his cousin to help with their house closing, given money to help sponsor family members, and apparently never asked for it back. I was on his bank account app one day paying a bill, apparently he once paid tuition to the university I attend but it wasn't my student number. He always talk about how i'm taking forever to finish university but its because i worked to pay most of my own tuition. My mom's like it could've been one of his friend's kids who came here as international students. He is very financially irresponsible, often pays bills late, and mismanages money. My mom kept getting calls from the bank about a missed mortgage payment, she tried telling him and saying to pay the bill or else the bank will come to our house with a sale sign. My parent's also tried making me co-sign towards the properties he purchased.
I'm literally suffering mentally because of the financially strain im having to go through and the financial abuse in this house. Like i've never been on vacation, i've only went on an airplane once in my entire life to India at age 4. I don't even have my own car, I take public transit. I'm just so worried about my financial future and that they'll rely on me to financially support then when they get even older.
