Why do people keep cats indoors?

My take on it is that a cat wants to be more free to roam. Not only that but wont keeping a cat indoors cause parasites to be more prevalent in the house? cats that are ouydoor even stay near or at their owners house and rarely leave. meanwhile indoors cats will stay outside for periods of times.
