“Burnout” is actually poor boundaries, not just workload
I know burnout is real and I’m not trying to downplay it, but I’ve been thinking about how often we blame workload alone when a big part of it can be boundaries.
Saying yes to everything. Answering messages at all hours. Not taking real breaks. Letting work bleed into personal time. Trying to be available to everyone all the time. That stuff adds up fast.
I’ve noticed for myself that I can have a “manageable” workload on paper but still feel completely drained if I’m not protecting my time or energy. On the flip side, I’ve had busier periods that felt way less overwhelming because I was stricter about when I was on and off.
I also think there’s pressure to always be responsive and helpful, especially at work, and it makes people feel like they can’t set limits without looking lazy or difficult.
Again, not saying burnout is just a personal failure or that jobs aren’t demanding. Some environments are genuinely unsustainable. But I do think boundaries play a bigger role than people want to admit.
