TTPD is her best work yet (and yes, I’m talking about the standard edition)

Discussion :taythink:

No other album feels like a concept album with a cohesive narrative the most like TTPD. Not even albums officially marketed or discussed as concept albums (like reputation and Midnights).

If folkmore stretched her storytelling capabilities, TTPD is where she really used these storytelling to express and even mythologize her own experiences.

This album really feels both lyrically and sonically like a woman descending into a manic madness because of a fleeting situationship magnified by the spotlight. Everything points to that (with some minor exceptions). Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me, But Daddy I Love Him, The Smallest Man, Fresh Out the Slammer, I Can Fix Him and even Fortnight are SUCH good songs reinforcing the theme.

Even at a micro-level, lyric-wise, it’s so good. But Daddy vividly captures a whole novel-worthy narrative across its verses. Very full and layered.

It reminds me so much of past Victorian-adjacent, Gothic era where women are pathologized for even small displays of intense emotion, very mad woman vibes. Irrationality is weaponized and they are silenced. Think The Wallpaper or Story of an Hour.

Just a shame that people engage with it as gossip feed and just analyze the artist, not the art which ironically proves her point lol
