All 31 cards ranked by looks.
What's up y'all back with another aesthetics ranking. For this one i'm basing my picks off of how good the card design is at conveying it's effects. If i can't make much of a distinction i will just go by how much i like the creativity/design of the card itself. I've included pictures of the cards (cropped a bit poorly from a tier list maker) for reference. I'm also going off the base effect of the card and not the mastery versions.
Since we already know the card names i cropped them out to save room, but factored in that knowing the card name helps make sense of the design. Also i could only add 20 images so only the top 20 contains image references (here is a link to a random cards tier list if you want to pull it up on another tab to use for the reference images i couldn't provide).
Ok let's begin!
#31 - Super Tower
^(I ranked ST last because it's hard to determine if this will buff your tower's damage or fortification, or both! To me it looks more like a defensive fort card, which is the opposite of it's actual effect in buffing the projectile damage; though you could argue just looking strong implies you can probably dish out some good punishment.)
#30 - Enemy Balance
^(With EB it's obvious you are getting a tradeoff with enemies and cash, but it's not really obvious what you are getting with each. Then playing the game, not only do we get more cash but we also like the increased enemies for farming. So it doesn't really feel like a tradeoff at all, and more of a buff on both ends. It also looks more like a fraction, and less like a separator.)
#29 - Wave Accelerator
^(It's a weird pick to put this one here, but it's only because at first glance it looks more like a time slow effect card. Then the name "Wave Accelerator" makes you think it might increase enemy spawn rate. Or you could assume that the actual time it takes the wave to complete will be sped up. But in reality it's the time) ^(inbetween) ^(the waves that is sped up. Just not super obvious what the card will do is all. The design only makes sense after you have read the description which is not a part of the design.)
#28 - Area of Effect
^(I don't think AOE has a clear design for what it does. It does look like a ring of sorts but it also looks like a portal to me. We have no real way of knowing what the specific card effect is until we read the the description. I have it ranked here on the list for that reason because i think more thought could have been put into the design.)
#27 - Wave Skip
^(I have WS pretty low on this list only because of how it compares to the other card designs and their effects. WS implies that the wave will be skipped, but the logo shows a skip action over an enemy. It looks like it could be an enemy attack skip action. It's really only the card name that conveys the card effect, but the design is still cool and unique!)
#26 - Extra Orb
^(EO is pretty clear that you will be getting an extra orb, but the card doesn't imply it will be an entirely different set of orbs from the W orbs. Then you learn you actually get extra orb)^(s) ^(once you get some labs in. I think the card could also be a bit more detailed, maybe have 3 orbs with a circle of arrows. The actual design is simple but not entirely effective. Also if you play Geometry Dash, it looks very familiar doesn't it :))
#25 - Plasma Cannon
^(We can tell immediately it's a cannon for sure. But, that's it. We have no way of knowing it's actually a boss cannon (elites with mastery). Like EO it only tells part of the story of the card. I'd also say that looks more like a fireball cannon over plasma. Still a cool design!)
#24 - Demon Mode
^(DM is low in creativity for the design, but it shows you exactly what your tower gets in-game. It just doesn't imply anything about the effect of the card other than the name and knowing what effects demons across various forms of media have. I have it higher than Plasma Cannon because Second Wind helps infer what Demon Mode might do. I would have liked to have seen a pitchfork, demon horns, and a demon tail along with the wings. It would have looked a lot cooler, but this game keeps the designs simple in nature.)
#23 - Intro Sprint
^(IS is obvious that you are getting through the beginning of the game a lot faster. The card effect is a bit more complex than the name of the card though. The design however is pretty effective in conveying what will happen. Sprint implies moving very quickly and we can see a stopwatch with a speedometer gauge moving up fast. I also love how the forward arrow creates the stopwatch. Very creative design, i love it. Going off design alone it is in my top 3 cards.)
#22 - Land Mine Stun
^(LMS design is effective it's just not totally obvious what it does. To me, an electric symbol implies either a charged attack version of the main attack, or a disabling of an ability via electricity (aka the stun). So yeah it's really effective but not completely apparent what it will do. I like the design though, it does a lot for keeping it simple.)
#21 - Energy Shield
^(Off the bat it's a clear design. Looks like a shield and the energy icon gives it the unique trait. I only have it here in the list because you don't know what the energy shield will do until you read the description. Like, it's definitely an energy shield but that's all i know about it. Like LMS it's an effective design but the card effects aren't totally apparent.)
- TOP 20 -
#20 - Recovery Package Chance
^(This one floated around in my list a lot. The design plays off the card name well, but without the name i am a little lost. The arrows are looping like it would in a cycle, but a cycling action is not what happens in the card effect. The chance is the only thing that is increased. So the design is a little misleading. If the design was styled like the Crit Chance card it would have been a lot more clear what happens. For that reason it ranks lower than the rest of the cards on this list.)
#19 - Energy Net
^(EN is like ES for me. Design is super clear, the card name infers something will be trapped, but you won't know how it works until you read the description. Since the card only affects bosses, i think including a big square in the design would better convey the card effect; though it's the most clear design out of the cards i ranked above this one.)
#18 - Second Wind
^(SW's design works super well with the card name, and it accurately represents what the wings look like in-game. The only reason it ends up here on the list is the card effect is more like a temporary period of invincibility rather than a last ditch burst of energy. Going by card mastery, the regen buff makes a lot more sense to the design and card name. But the base effect isn't totally accurate to what is represented by the card.)
#17 - Fortress
^(Fortress is obviously a defensive card, the design is pretty clear with that. The only reason i have it here is because it's not clear it's affecting defense absolute until you read the description. The castle in the middle is pretty indicitive it's going to affect something specific though. I also like the design a lot and in my opinion it represents the card well.)
#16 - Slow Aura
^(I had a hard time deciding where to put this card since it's design has the same weak points as the one's above it on this list. The snail is automatically associated with all things slow, so that is spot on. Like Fortress however, there isn't enough detail on the design to know what the card will affect. SA does rank higher for me than Fortress because it's easier to determine the card effect from the name. Design-wise they are both equal for me.)
#15 - Ultimate Crit
Processing img drgztp8zx3sg1...
^(UC has a solid design. The distinctive impact trail tells us it's one of the three crit cards, and the stone logo represents the ultimate weapons. But because we are Tower players and we know ball, a non-player won't be able to tell "ultimate" crit is going to affect ultimate weapons. But i still think they'd be able to infer the card is upping crit ability in some way. For these reasons it ranks last out of the three crit cards, and 15th overall on my list.)
#14 - Death Ray
^(DR's design is pretty accurate. Like yeah, that's a death ray. We don't really know any specific card effects but the results in-game pretty much match what is shown here. I do think they could have indicated somehow the ray would spin around the tower but that's something easily found out just by using the card once. The only other weak point i can see is a non-player thinking this is a thermometer without the card name (i find this to be a pretty determining factor in all honesty).)
#13 - Critical Coin
^(Ranked second of the crit cards, CC's design is sound. We have the coin logo and the crit trail. This clearly indicates that a coin buff is involved with crits somehow. Just like the other cards above this one, we can't determine the exact card specifics from the design. And you'll also need to know what the coin logo means for this game (though the c symbol and the card name make it obvious).)
#12 - Crit Chance
^(The highest ranked of the three crit cards. I thought this design most accurately represented crits in this game. It also has the distinctive up arrow that i think was helpful in distinguishing this card as a direct chance raiser. It ranks #12 because from design alone, a non-Tower player might not know for sure it's specifically for crit (but it does resemble something that affects damage in a way).)
#11 - Attack Speed
^(AS has a perfect design for a card in this game. The speedometer represents speed, the guage hand also seconds as a projectile beam. It's clever and simple. The specific card effect is also accurately represented by the design alone. Just like the previous cards however, a non-Tower player could mistake the design to affect something other than attack for speed. Because of that, it just barely misses out on my top 10 for this list.)
-- Top 10 --
#10 - Range
^(To me this design represents a sonar screen, which is something that determines range and location. But i think the design also works for specifically for the card since there isn't much else of anything in the game it could represent; and this design is something i could easily see representing range in other games.)
#9 - Berserker
^(Berserker is in my top 10 because it's clear that this card is going to effective damage in some way. Someone who doesn't play this game could easily guess this is a combat card and i think that makes it an effective design. While the specific card effect isn't clear from the design, i do think it's easily inferred that this card is going to dish a lot of punishment; but you will need the card description to understand the exact effect.)
#8 - Extra Defense
^(Fully obvious this is a defense card, you don't need to play this game to tell. This exact design is probably something that is seen in a lot of other games too. There are two minor flaws that i think knock this card back a few spots in my list: We don't know it's going to affect Defense % specifically (though there isn't much else it could affect, and this card also buffs def absolute indirectly anyways), and that it might resemble a shield ability to a non-player without knowing the name (but shield is associated with defense so it works in my eyes). Not totally perfect but a very effective design.)
#7 - Coins
^(Finally it's here. It's just, coins. Does exactly what you'd think. Design is literally as lazy as it gets, but also doesn't do more than it should. It won't rank any higher for me because you need to play The Tower to understand what it's effecting specifically... but like Critical Coin, the c symbol is indicitive of a currency. Not 100% obvious right, but really close. Compared to the other cards, it's enough to make it here.)
#6 - Health Regen
^(It's gonna be an HP related card from the get-go. The plus symbol shows something is being gained additively. Accurate to the card effect, simple but solid design. I gave it 6th in my list because there is no way to know if this is going to effect Regen, or HP, or both. It's a deciding factor but this is just such an obvious card that there is no way it wouldn't be near the top.)
#5 - Health
^(Yeah! That's health. For sure an HP card, simple design but completely clear. It sits just above Regen for me because the design looks more tailored to an HP stat specifically. At least personally for me i see it above Regen but you could easily swap those two around, and justifyingly so.)
#4 - Free Upgrades
^(You know at first, this card got my 6th spot. But as i was deciding which of the HP cards most accurately represented that stat they effect, i got tired. In that moment i had a brief period of reflection and realized... FU can't be mistaken for anything else in the game. The yellow color is synonymous with the utility category where free-ups are found. The up arrow represents an increase of chance, yeah it's pretty clear to me. I did think about a non-player trying to decide what this would mean, but i was certain they'd be able to determine it represents an increase,) ^(of something.) ^(Good enough for me.)
--- Top 3 ---
#3 - Damage
Processing img 1a1thspi94sg1...
^(3rd place goes to Damage. The sword perfectly represents damage, it's a general design that suits the nature of what the card will do. The specific card effect is effortlessly assumed without a description or card name. Non-players know what this card will end up doing, in any game really.)
^(So, why does it not rank highest? Well... it's because it's blue. Blue is a great color for damage, but so many defensive cards in the game are blue. Whereas red cards seem to correlate more with... damage. And yes, i know that damage technically is defensive... because killing the enemies before they hit you is) ^(defensive)**^(. But for a card that amplifies every damage in every area of the game... red seems so much more powerful to me. And like a dark red too. Totally personal taste, could see this card being 1st for someone else totally and completely. But not for me.)
#2 - Cash
^(Woop, there it is! 2nd place goes to the Cash card. I like this card because there isn't any confusion to what the card will do. It's simple, totally effective, and has a bit of The Tower flair to it.)
^(It misses out on being in the top spot only because... red. Why is it red. Money makes me think green. Why no green. They gave us red instead.)
^(#makecashgreen)
#1 - Nuke
^(Interesting right? Not what you expected right? Feeling... a little distraught, mayhaps?)
^(Listen, i understand what you are feeling. I didn't expect this to be here for me either. But this is how i will sum up my reasoning:)
^(We don't need to know the card effect...) ^(because there is a nuke on the cover)**^(.)
^(We don't need the card name...) ^(because there is a nuke on the cover)**^(.)
^(We don't need to know what game it's from...) ^(because there is a nuke on the cover)**^(.)
^(Non-players, heck even non-)^(gamers) ^(know what this card will do.)
^(The biggest thing with my top 3 was the card color, and this card even has that down. It's a perfect theme for radiation.)
^(Ticks all boxes, solid design and theme for this game, perfect color, yeah man it just works for me.)
----- Extra -----
I appreciate you all engaging with me on this post. There's a lot of negativity around this game on reddit. It's cool seeing others just having fun and being able to enjoy the game we like to play.
