American in Belgrade for 2 weeks - advice?

Turizam / Tourism

I'm currently learning Serbian the best I can, to at least have a few phrases and understand what is being spoken. I really want to learn about your city, people, and country, with a focus on culture, food, and music. I would love to see punk rock shows!

I realize that perhaps, people from my country might not be seen in the best light. I do not wish to make anyone upset or angry - people are hopefully separate from politics. What would be the best neighborhoods/districts that I could focus on for nightlife and music? What are the great museums for art and history, both modern and ancient?

Is there anything I need to be mindful of, when I am in public? I have no concerns for crime/danger - I assume I've dealt with enough to prepare me for the worst. I just want to be sure that I can ask questions and learn about people's lives without being an ignorant tourist or insulting anyone. I would like to be respectful of my interactions, knowing that my country might not deserve a lot of respect right now.

I guess, to summarize... how can I be the best visitor to your town that I can be, knowing that I am coming from a country that is... troubled?

Hvala.
