My career depends on a product that I do not understand

Finance & Operations

I'm a D365 F&O dev that works for a major consultancy (~3.5 YOE). It recently occurred to me that every implementation I've been on has been an upgrade from AX 2012 or GP. I'm sure it happens, but I have never personally seen a firm ditch their legacy ERP for Microsoft. I have also noticed that functional consultants, end users, and posters on this sub alike seem to despise the system (though i realize that most implementations are soul crushing regardless of product..nobody loves their ERP).

Do companies stick with Microsoft because they have to? Are they locked into the ecosystem? Is there a scenario in which F&O would truly be the optimal choice for a company in 2026?

I like what I do, but I can't help but feel that I have been pigeon-holed into a career that relies on the demand for a product that would not exist if not for mid-market industrial shops that have:

  1. Tons of money to blow

  2. An MBA-bearing CTO that needs to justify his or her existence by leading an 'IT transformation'

3: A long-standing and practically irrevocable dependance on Microsoft

AI scares me, but the volatile and/or forced demand for F&O scares me more. I have no doubt that many billions of dollars worth of companies will continue to live on F&O or its equivalent 5 five years from now, but what about 10, 15, 20 years?

I don't know what the future holds, but with regard to my experience in the field (see above), Microsoft clearly not giving a fuck about F&O, and the ever-accelerating pace of enterprise tech innovation, I am pretty confident that my need of a job will outlive the demand for D365 devs. Besides, its only a matter of time before someone trains a model that can translate functional requirements to X++; That's a tall order, but its over for me as soon as it happens. And it will happen. So what the hell am i doing? What the hell are you doing?

To be fair, F&O is the only product I have worked with; perhaps other ERPs are just as bad. Maybe I am overthinking it. Very curious to hear your thoughts!
