Advice on car hire and driving in JHB and surrounds

Hello Josi people. Haven’t been to Josi in ages. Need to be there for 3 days mid may for a sports tournament at Ellis Park area. Where is a good area to stay, not super expensive and any advice about car hire or transport options. Is it safe enough to drive around or better to use ride sharing instead?
