what ive learned after looking at 30+ etsy shops this month
spent the last 2 weeks doing free etsy shop audits and the same mistakes keep coming up over and over
figured id share what i found because honestly some of these are so easy to fix and most sellers have no idea
the biggest one: your tags are probably copying your title. etsy combines title + tags when ranking you in search. if your title says "handmade ceramic mug" and your tags also say "handmade ceramic mug" you just wasted 3 out of 13 tag slots. those should be completely different words like "coffee lover gift" or "pottery mug" or "housewarming present". most shops i looked at were wasting 30-50% of their tag slots this way
other stuff i kept seeing:
first photo is not doing its job. you have maybe half a second before someone scrolls past. lifestyle photos with the product in context beat plain white background almost every time. especially for handmade stuff
first 160 characters of your description show up in search results. so many shops start with "welcome to my shop!" or "thanks for visiting!" thats prime real estate for keywords and youre using it to say hello to nobody
almost nobody is using pinterest. this one blew my mind. pinterest pins stay searchable for months. instagram posts die in 24 hours. yet everyone is grinding instagram and ignoring pinterest completely. for gift type products and home decor its basically free traffic sitting there
price anchoring. etsy lets you show a crossed out original price next to sale price. simple psychology but it works. most shops dont bother
anyway hope this helps someone. if anyone has questions about tags or seo stuff happy to help in the comments
