Pursuit of Jade, Romance Done Right
That said, the political intrigue turns out to be somewhat of a let down. I can't help thinking about Princess Royal, where it is the opposite. The political side was well done in PR, but the romance part is merely meh. We kinda were told that Pei Wen Xuan was in love with the princess, though never see why. Sure, she is pretty and competent to boot, but that is never quite enough to appreciate the romance, is it?
In PJ, the story builds the relationship piece by piece. It is fun to watch and decide when the two decide that the other is truly the one. It is easier to see that Changyu seems to commit first, whereas Yan Zheng/Xie Zheng is a bit more tentative. This makes the mutual feelings feel real.
On a lighter note, what is it about the bath tub? Does it take one for the marriage to consummate? The parallel with Princess Royal will have been complete, if the story ends with Fan Changyu pregnant with Xie Zheng's child.
At any rate, I can't help feeling that the series feels a bit rushed toward the end. I am curious if this is the effect of the director trying too hard to close out the series before the 40 episode mark. Maybe the novel works better? Perhaps I should look it up. Needless to say Pursuit of Jade is now right up there for me with Princess Royal as the top CDrama favorites that I wouldn't mind rewatching.
