if you're a six figure business, when should you make the switch to shopify plus (and is it worth it?)
we moved from shopify basic to plus when we were doing a bit over mid-six figures and honestly it wasn’t some big “unlock growth" moment for us but it was more like friction slowly disappearing
if i had to simplify it Basic vs Plus isn’t about features but it’s more about tolerance for chaos
on Basic, you can run a solid business, but:
– checkout is mostly fixed you adapt to it
– ops are stitched together across apps
– a lot of edge cases = manual work
– during spikes things feel a bit fragile
on Plus nothing magically improves revenue but:
– you get more control over checkout (messaging, flows, small friction points)
– Shopify Flow replaces a lot of “app + manual check” workflows
– fewer dependencies on random apps means less breakage
– things just feel more stable when volume increases
the question is when does this actually matter?
from our experience Plus only started making sense when:
1. ops complexity > marketing problems
if you’re still figuring out product/creative/CAC, don’t upgrade
if your main pain is “things are breaking / messy / hard to scale” then it starts to make sense more sense honestly
2. you’re running 5-8+ critical apps that are core to your flow
that’s usually a signal you’re compensating for platform limitations
3. checkout drop-offs start bothering you conceptually
not low conversion but “i wish i could change this part of checkout” if you’ve never had that thought you probably don’t need Plus
4. you’re doing consistent volume, not spiky wins
Plus doesn’t help you get to product-market fit
it helps you handle product-market fit better
some very specific things that actually moved for us:
– adding clearer delivery timelines at checkout (reduced hesitation)
– using Flow to auto-tag+route orders (cut manual ops time)
– reducing app stack leading to fewer random bugs during peak traffic
– better segmentation leading to slightly stronger retention flows
none of these are game-changing alone tbh but together they reduce friction across the system for sure
biggest mistake i see: people upgrade thinking Plus will fix growth but the biggest reality check you need is it won’t.it just exposes where your system is inefficient
if you’re at 6-figure revenue, i’d ask:
– are we losing time because of ops not acquisition?
– are we stacking tools to compensate for missing control?
– are we stable but inefficient?
if yes then start evaluating Plus
if not then stay on Basic and fix fundamentals first
would love to chat in the comments/ dm about more viewpoints/ experiences on plus
