Fret spacing

I have always wondered why the frets on a guitar are all parallel to each other. It is obvious from the length of the different strings when a guitar is properly intonated that each one should have a slightly different scale length. Is there a reason other than ease of manufacture that frets aren't angled in the same way as the bridge has to be?
