Boyfriend with a kid

My boyfriend has a kid with a woman previous to me but he never makes any attempt to see her. He doesn't make excuses or anything but he has plenty of opportunities and just ignores them. Why would this be? He seems to care about the kid but pretty much avoids her. Kind of worried about the future if I have a kid with him. Would it be the same?
