CMV: The UK House of Lords Should Have ~300 Members, Not 800+
The House of Lords is the only upper house of any national legislature currently existing that has a larger membership than its lower house counterpart. The House of Lords also serves largely as a glorified retirement village for retiring MPs, and for a place to shove politicians that the Government wants to stay on in some capacity but that can't actually win elections. All of the House of Lords' numerous other issues are only exacerbated by its bloated size.
The House of Lords, in its ideal function as an apolitical chamber of review, would be much better served by having a fixed number, somewhere around 300, about a third of its current size, which would allow it to reference a diverse array of backgrounds and expertise while not being an overgrown monstrosity, combined with stricter vetting processes for the appointment of new Lords and a mandatory retirement age of 80, so as to curtail the worst flaws of the institution.
