Is my baby colic? Something else? Just a baby?
22 day old little girl. She is my little bundle of joy but she has been driving Mommy crazy. I generally am much more patient and positive but now I am starting to wonder if something is wrong.
Every doctor appointment and check up they all use the same word; perfect. Relieving to hear but they don’t get to see her 24/7.
Week 1 was a little rough. Two nights of the first week were completely sleepless. We tried everything and nothing seemed to calm her down. We had her in our room in the bassinet. We were attempting to breastfeed. Nothing ever calmed her down except the boob. That turned into combo feeding as the demand was just too excessive.
Week 2 was a bit better. We moved strictly to formula. We moved her into her nursery. Kept the room dark, white noise playing. We developed a bedtime routine. Sponge bath, bottle, and then crib. This worked wonders. She pretty consistently got to bed around 815 would wake around 1130. Wake again around 330 until finally waking for the day at 630. Completely manageable schedule for us. I took the overnight care and mommy would do the mornings. She would fuss in the mornings. Sleep all afternoon. Then we would try to keep her awake from 6-8 before bedtime.
Week 3 rolled around and it’s been very odd. I thought we were making some real progress as she slept from 8pm-230 one night. There have been several long stretches of sleep. She’s been eating a bit more but also the crying has been crazy. It seems like whenever she’s not sleeping or eating she is crying. As the day progresses the crying goes from moans to violent screams. Purple crying I have seen people call it. She’s had a few instances where she’s inconsolable for close to 3 hours. Right now I’m just staring at the monitor watching her squirm around in her sleep wondering if I will get any sleep tonight. She was purple crying from about 10-130.
I keep looking up colic babies and she definitely has cried more than 3 hours a day consistently. Maybe not in a row but 3 hours for her is light work. Is she colic? Something else? Or am I just a new parent?
