$8,600 credit limit - too high, too low or just right?

Discussion / Conversation

Hi everyone,

I was recently approved for the Citi Double Cash card with an $8,600 limit, and I’m trying to understand how that compares to what’s typical.

For context:

• This is my second credit card

• My first card is Discover (opened in 2019)

• Discover limit: $18,100

• Current balance: $4,487 (previous high was \~$9,300)

• Experian score: 751 (dropped \~3 points after the Citi application)

Over the past year, I’ve lowered my monthly expenses and been more intentional with my finances, so I’m focused on paying down debt and building long-term wealth (retirement, etc.).

My questions:

• Does an $8,600 limit seem average for my profile?

• Is it considered high or low compared to others?

• Should I request a credit limit increase soon, or let it grow over time?

Any insight or personal experiences would be really helpful!
