CommonLaw with 2 kids Financials
How do you split household bills? We’re not married, but we have two kids (ages 2 and 3). No joint accounts. His gross income is 150k, and mine is 50k. He works 80% of the time out of town, while I stay home with the kids. My mom helps take care of them when I’m at work. I also handle all the house chores, cooking, and even some yard work (both summer and winter).
He pays the mortgage ($1,300/month), two vehicle payments ($1,900/month), and house plus one auto insurance ($450/month). His mom gives him $1,000/month for renting the basement and also buys groceries and some of our kids’ needs. When he’s home, he pays for groceries and dining out.
I pay all the utilities, internet, and phone bills ($800/month), plus $200/month for car insurance (the car is registered under his mom), $400 to my TFSA, $200 for our life insurance, $750 CAD for our investment in our home country, and $300 for my student loans. I also give some money to my mom and send financial support to my sick father.
So basically, my monthly salary just covers my expenses 😌. He doesn’t allow me to take on a second job because our kids need me.
My problem is that he’s asking me to contribute more and sometimes questions where my money goes.
