Any advice for playing as a two commodity faction during the Age of Commerce Galactic Event?
We were going to play a game and the host surprised us by revealing we'd be playing with the Age of Commerce Galactic Event. Which reads:
'Players do not have to be neighbours to perform transactions with each other.
Players do not have a maximum number of commodities; when they refresh commodities, they gain a number of commodities equal to their commodities value instead.
Players can share non-faction technology with other players as part of a transaction. When sharing technology, the receiving player gains that technology from their own deck; the sharing player does not lose the technology.'
That game ended up being cut short due to unforeseen circumstances, but we've agreed to try ands do it again with the same factions and player positioning when we can, though we're unsure when that will be.
At first, I was quite eager to try the Galactic Event. But when we started, I realised I was at a disadvantage since I was playing as the Yin and thus being the only faction with two commodities.
When I got Trade on round one, I did what I always do replenished everyone's commodities as a good will gesture and way of speeding up the game, but quickly realised that was a mistake. Even though I played the Trade Primary and made a deal so I ended up with five trade goods at the end of that turn, everyone else were sitting at 6-8 commodities they could trade with anyone. It's the first time I've played Trade and ended up poorer than my opponents. And that was before I spent most of them to get more units on the board for early expansion.
I'm not sure how to fix this weakness as the only two commodity faction in the game? Before the event was revealed, I thought I'd try to compensate for my weak economy by selling my promissory note and perhaps my agent ability if needed, and have a couple of allies where we agreed to always replenish each other's commodities and trade them.
The only thing I could think of was to use my Commander's ability to acquire more tech and then sell it, but that would mean I'd have to use resources and a token for tech whenever I could, and that could impair my game. It felt like I'd be very dependent on getting either the Trade or Technology cards to stay in the game, never mind have a chance of winning. Which would be especially hard because my neighbour is the Nomad and would want to get Trade as often as he could, especially in the early game.
I wanted to try and take over Mecatol and stay there, but even with Yin's defensive advantages, the other players could probably just buy a lot more units to throw at me, overpowering my Indoctrination and Agent ability.
Has anyone played with this Event and had these struggles, or know of a way around them?
