New User Experience March 2026 and what you can do
Hi Folks. I switched to Ebox 1G three weeks ago. My previous provider was Bell Fibe 1.5G. My download speed with Bell wifi was 500-600Mbps (info for comparison).
My first week with Ebox was disappointing. Download speed was 200-300Mbps (wifi), but I realized my Beacon 3.1 needed adjustments. Here is the breakdown so it might help others:
1-Disabled 2.4GHz wifi completely. My devices all support 5GHz and the router was constantly switching between the two causing lag and lower speed.
2-Changed the wifi settings for 5GHz from auto to manual. Selected 80MHz for bandwidth and a channel that wasn't crowded in my apartment. in my case, it was channel 112. To find a suitable channel you'll need a wifi analyzer app on your device to scan for interference. You'll need to play with these settings for a few days to find optimal settings.
3-Moved the router to the center of the house. All devices are within ~4m of the router and max one plaster wall in between. for this setting I can also select 160MHz but in practice it didn't make any difference. 80MHz is more stable than 160MHz without a practical change in speed.
4-To analyze your download speed, it is important what server you connect to. In my case, connecting to a Bell server in Ottawa (where I live) yields better speeds than the Ebox server in Montreal. Beside that, I have downloaded stuff with a speed of ~690Mbps this week, which was the highest I have reached so far. In reality a download speed higher than 700Mbps is rare with a household router, despite tweaking. Getting a speed of ~1Gbps can only happen through a LAN cable. Also worth noting that for a 4K streaming, you'll need only 50Mbps speed!
Overall, I do recommend Ebox, if it is supported where you live. The price was the reason we switched and now we are receiving the same speed for one third of the Bell's price. Cheers.
