I asked 100 traders about options (buyers vs sellers)… here’s what I actually learned
So over the past few days I made two posts here:
- One from an option buyer’s perspective (small risk, multiple attempts, aiming for 10x–20x moves)
- One asking option sellers how they actually think (risks, survival, what they track)
Between both posts, I got close to ~100 replies.
This post is not to prove anyone wrong — just sharing what I observed from all the responses.
What I expected
I thought I’d get:
- some deep insights
- different perspectives
- maybe a few experienced traders breaking things down
What actually happened
1. On the buyer post → most people said “this is gambling”
Common replies were:
- “lottery ticket”
- “roulette is better”
- “you’ll blow your account”
But very few actually explained why in detail.
A few good points did come up:
- timing matters more than direction
- theta decay kills before the move comes
- volatility matters more than just price
But honestly, 70–80% of replies were just dismissive.
2. On the seller post → replies sounded smarter… but still incomplete
Here I got more structured answers like:
- use strict stop loss
- avoid expiry chaos
- track OI
- sell far strikes
- biggest risk = gap up/down
These are all valid.
The interesting part (this surprised me)
The difference in tone was huge:
- Buyer discussion → emotional, dismissive
- Seller discussion → calm, confident
My conclusion
- Option buying is not gambling → unless you don’t have an edge
- Option selling is not safe → unless you understand risk deeply
The real difference is not buyer vs seller.
It’s:
structured vs unstructured trading.
