Considering signing on RSAF (ADSS/AWO)

Question

Hi, I’ve recently graduated with a diploma and completed my NS back in 2023. I’m currently considering signing on with RSAF, and I’ve already completed the COMPASS test and am waiting for my aeromedical.

I’m particularly interested in ADSS (Air Defence Systems Specialist) or AWO (Air Warfare Officer) in the Air Defence Weapon (ADW) domain, and I’d like to understand what I should realistically expect in these roles.

Specifically, I’m hoping to learn more about:

• The training pipeline and how demanding it is for ADSS vs AWO

• Day-to-day responsibilities and how the roles differ

• How operational the roles are vs monitoring/desk-based work

• Work-life balance (e.g. shift work, deployments, exercises)

• Career progression and long-term opportunities

I’m also curious about:

• How competitive selection is for ADSS vs AWO, especially for someone signing on with a diploma

• What traits or skills RSAF looks for in candidates for these vocations

• Key factors to consider when choosing between ADSS and AWO

Lastly, for those with experience:

• What surprised you most after joining?

• What kind of people tend to enjoy or struggle in these roles?

If there are any regulars currently in ADSS or AWO who are open to sharing more, I’d really appreciate if you could DM me as well.

Thanks in advance!
