Going on a cruise to japan and need excursion ideas and tips for Kyoto (the cruise terminal in maizuru), Niigata, and Hakodate.
Hello all as the title says looking for excursion recommendations we only have about 10 hours in each city. the exact times for each are
Kyoto (Maizuru) Japan 7:00 am 5:00 pm
Nigata, Japan 8:00 am 5:00 pm
Hakodate, Japan 7:30 am 5:00 pm
This will be my 3rd time in japan and my very first cruise ever. We are open to the excursions offered by the boat or excursions offered by get your guide. The boat's excursions include one to Amanohashidate, and another to "discover maizuru". We was hoping we could do self guided travel for Nigata and Hakodate and would love advice and tips for these as well. We are also open to self guided travel on the maizuru day but from what i saw it is a pretty remote region.
Details for the 2 excursions are:
Discover Maizuru:
- Your journey begins at Kongo-in, a peaceful Buddhist Temple known for its beautiful gardens, seasonal foliage, and three-storied pagoda. Take a moment for some quiet reflection, before continuing to Maizuru Brick Park, where former naval warehouses have been transformed into cultural spaces preserving the region’s maritime heritage.
- After, head to Gorogatake Park, where you can soak in the breathtaking views over Maizuru Bay and the surrounding cityscape from a scenic observatory.
- Next, visit the 17th-century Tanabe Castle, where very little of its original construction remain – only a few stone walls and a reconstructed gatehouse/turret. Walk among the ruins and learn about the region’s fascinating feudal history, before concluding your Discover Maizuru excursion at the Tore Tore Center.
- Here, explore this lively indoor market, as you browse the various stalls for fresh seafood, local produce, and other Maizuru specialties.
Amanohashidate:
- Your journey begins with a leisurely cable-car ride to Kasamatsu Park, where you ascend to an incredible overlook that promises breathtaking views of Amanohashidate’s pine-lined sandbar and the surrounding scenery.
- Once you’ve soaked in the beautiful vistas, continue to the historic Motoise Kono Shrine, a Shinto site of worship offering traditional architecture, spiritual tranquility, and unparalleled insight into the region’s cultural traditions.
- After, enjoy a lovely stroll along the sandbar, relishing the refreshing sea breeze as you walk beneath the shade of hundreds of pine trees.
- Conclude your Amanohashidate Highlights excursion at Nariaiji Temple, a hillside Buddhist site of worship featuring even more stunning views over the surrounding sea and mountains – the perfect spot for a bit of calm reflection.
