What Japanese think of foreigners pretend to be Japenese on social media?
I have been wondering what Japanese people think about foreigners pretending to be Japanese on social media?
Lately, my feed on X has been full of Japanese content, especially after Elon Musk said he wanted more of it on the platform. It feels like the algorithm suddenly flipped, and I don’t think it’s just me.
Some of these posts get tons of likes and retweets, but when I check them, a lot of them are saying pretty racist or extreme stuff. Then if you look a bit closer, the accounts aren’t even based in Japan, they’re from places like the US, India, or Southeast Asia, or using VPNs to look like they are in Japan.
I have seen pretty clear signs that some of these people are just pretending to be Japanese to farm the algorithm, and a lot of them seem to run multiple accounts too. It kind of feels like a trend to posting controversial stuff for attention while hiding behind a fake identity not only X but other social media as well.
Makes me wonder if Japanese people have noticed this, and what they actually think about it.
