I’m renting a house with no lease agreement and it’s backfiring terribly. What do I do from here?
My bf Gabe and I (both mid 20s) have been renting his grandmother’s house for 2 years. She had moved out a few years prior and could barely afford the taxes and insurance, and we were looking for a cheaper place. It was a very casual agreement. We pay about half market rent in exchange for living amongst (almost) all of her things. Our bedroom was the only room completely cleaned out.
It has been one problem after another since we moved in. It’s an old house and honestly due for a lot of maintenance. I’m going to give some examples.
-
The washer once gave out during the wash cycle of my load. It took me an hour to find and wring out everything. The machine was replaced by Gabe’s parents (our acting landlords essentially) about a week later.
-
One time our water heater broke and flooded the laundry room. This time I felt like they barely cared that we didn’t have hot water. Eventually Gabe spent $600 on a new one and his dad helped him install it. (also think we might have mold from this)
-
There have been at least 3 times where we haven’t been able to shower here for a week or so, and one time we weren’t able to run water at all.
-
We paid $400 for a plumber to come out after our shower backed up with sediment water. The entire plumbing system is rotted and needs replacing. Gabe’s parents have no plans to fix this and I don’t even think they’ve told his grandmother.

Lastly, and this is happening now, we have some leak in the kitchen. It’s coming from the baseboard in the corner by the dishwasher, AND the carpet in the room on the other side of the wall is wet too. It’s stinking up our house and now I’m even more freaked out about mold.
I feel like Gabe’s parents care less and less with each problem. This house is a money pit and a burden to them, and I get it. But… people pay to live here. The vibe I get is that they would prefer we live here until they inherit and sell. Idk how much longer I can live like this.
Maybe part of me wanted to get that off my chest, but I do also want advice. What would you do here?
