Starting high school with an interest in Bioinformatics—seeking advice if pathway is close to realistic and any useful websites that you use.

discussion

Hi! Freshman/yr9 (Australia) I feel like its time to get serious in terms of my career and this is the last of my youth to get not even a head start, and stem jobs usually have a lot of competition. Not really a math person but I try to be, my strength lies in english and science.

So far here is what I have prepared (really basic stuff)

I started to learn python on sololearn, just beginning variables lol.

I have revised basic biology in my free time, though I may need some direction for bioinformatics, ( little lost on how to start 😅)

For VCE in the future Im choosing

- maths

- biology

- IT/digital tech

- english

- chemistry (maybe?)

My pathway for now is

- 3 year bachelor of science with  2 majors: genomic/DNA and CS

Then getting jobs like a genomics data analyst, research assistant, junior data scientist.

At the age 24-30 I plan to moving onto jobs such as a bioinformatics scientist, computational biologist, data science. I’m unsure whether these are realistic or too vague, as my school doesn’t provide any resources for such these specific pathways and careers, or if I need to extend into a masters degree to get these kind of positions.

TLDR: Noob wants some advice on what are the basics of bioinformatics to research in free time, and if the pathway is still realistic for today. I am not asking for someone to pick my courses, I just need some insight from the bioinformatics community as to whether these are doable or if a bachelor is insufficient.
