Need a recommendation

Looking for a version recommendation (If anyone has a complete description of the patch notes from every version, feel free to comment it and move on):

I find myself playing the original fire red every few years. I enjoy the base game, but I’m looking for something new since you can only play the same game so many times over.

Radical Red has peaked my interest, but I’m a worried the differences will be too much. I’ve already decided I will be playing on easy mode, so I don’t need a difficulty recommendation.

I just want to have some of the cool features and such, but I don’t really want anything past Gen5 to be included. What would be a good version (patch #) for me to play? I would be ok with Megas, but I’d prefer to avoid all of the “new” gen stuff that honestly just feels obnoxious and confusing (ie. Z-moves, Gigantamax, regional variants, raids, etc…).

And if I am being greedy and I should just play the newest patch and accept that I’m going to get confused, call me out on it!
