Beginner needs help!!!!!!

Hi Folks. I brought a electric guitar few months back. I was very excited to learn in the initial days. But slowly that faded away. I tried doing Synster free video course as well thinking if I do that everyday maybe I will build the motivation to play guitar. But that too faded away.

My friends suggest learning ur favorite song would help you be in track. So I thought if I picked up sweet child of mine from guns and roses.... Maybe I will be stick to it. But I again lost the motivation.

People who are slwf taught guitarist.... How do I stick to this and atleast learn few songs by end of this year. I really really wanna learn to play electric guitar something I always wanted to do from a kid. But due to circumstances could never afford one. Now when I can afford and have one I am not finding the motivation to play it.

How do I start learning? Do I start with chords? Or as my friends said start with songs I like?

Don't want my investment to go waste and it saddens me to see my guitar collecting dust.
