Is my DH4300 Plus a dud?

I am writing this after nearly fully month of ownership and I feel like i've gotten almost nowhere with it.

I bought this to build my own media server, went through days of setting up the Arr stack to get things going, and everything seemed well, until the device just would randomly freeze and become completely inaccessible, with the only way to reboot it was to unplug it and plug it back it (i tried holding both the power button and reset button, nothing happened). this happened daily, without warning, and nothing seemed to work to fix it.

Eventually i pivoted and used a mac mini for the heavy lifting, used the nas just for a storage, and I setup an SMB share and some docker compose file magic to make it so i didn't have to put in my password constantly. that seemed fine, but then out of nowhere my volume corrupted. Not a problem, i didn't have that much stored and it probably was just compounding of failed file downloads, so i backed up what i could and did a drive test on my 4 brand new barracuda 8TB drives (i know, they are not NAS rated drives, I'm just getting started in all this and figured these will last until i am capable of affording better drives). All reported as healthy, no issues, just the volume seemed corrupted. so i format the volume, start from scratch, and all is well for a bit. Mac mini seems to be doing its roll just fine, storage is working, i slowly move things back over and start hosting my game rom's on it.

Fast forward to today, the new update rolls out, and i start the update. update fails. several of the apps i installed include the docker stop working, and i cant seem to reinstall the apps that require docker and the comics app for some reason. i cant seem to shut off the device without pulling the cable again, but everything is accessible unlike when that happened before. I figured id retry the update as a manual install. that fails too.

At this point, Im just scratching my head and wondering what is causing this. Has anyone else had similar issues? I have 1 more day in my amazon return or exchange window so maybe I should pursue that just to see if maybe i did get a faulty unit?
