Wanting to take a long leave due to raising kids
Hello everyone. I am currently a substitute teacher at the Calgary Board of Education and I had a few questions I wasn’t sure where to ask.
I’ve been subbing for a couple years with a few short part-time contracts, with an 18 month maternity leave in between. I returned to work less than a year ago and only sub half-days. I do this because I don’t want to put my daughter (she’s 2) in childcare and can only sub when a family member is able to watch her (usually her grandma or aunt).
For now, I’m able to sub because there are family members available but that may soon no longer be the case. In that case, I would no longer wish to work and stay home with my daughter instead. These are the questions I have:
- If I decide to quit subbing for now until my kids are all in school (I do want more kids), then what are the implications I would have to face? I have an Interim Teaching License which I had to get renewed once before as well. Would I lose my teaching license?
- If I quit CBE, will they take me back on in the future?
- Would I have to be re-certified and what is the process of recertification if so (e.g., returning to school, TQS etc.)? After how long of a leave would this be required if so?
- Who should I contact for this information? The CBE itself, ATA?
I’ve just been very confused about it all and I don’t want to lose my teaching license.
